Break the Feed: Social Media & Youth

Welcome to Break the Feed: Social Media and Youth!

This workshop empowers adults to guide youth toward healthier digital habits and balanced online engagement. By understanding social media dynamics and the psychological factors affecting well-being, you will gain actionable techniques to foster supportive communication and meaningful offline connections. For the best experience, work through the sections in numerical order (1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.). I reference earlier material as we go, so staying in order ensures you don't miss important context!

What You Will Walk Away With

  • Understand how social media affects teen mental health and well-being.

  • Learn simple ways to talk openly with teens about their online habits.

  • Get practical ideas that help teens set healthy limits and enjoy offline life.

Structure

  • Learning Session 1: Foundations

  • What to Expect:  This introductory session defines core social media concepts, explores the psychological impacts of online engagement, and builds a foundational understanding of digital literacy.

  • Learning Session 2: Perspective

  • What to Expect: In this session, we will explore why social media habits can sometimes turn into an addiction, focusing on factors like FOMO and the pressure of constant social comparison. We’ll also discuss how these digital experiences affect mental health and daily well-being, helping you better understand the psychological forces at play for anyone, adults included.

  • Learning Session 3: Action

  • What to Expect: In this learning session, we will explore how open communication and active guidance help teens build healthier digital habits. You will learn approaches to embrace a supportive, companion-style relationship and practice ways to start meaningful, non-judgmental conversations about your teen’s online world.

  • Learning Session 4: Integration

  • What to Expect: In this final session, we explore how social media affects youth well-being, both the benefits and the risks. You will learn practical strategies to set healthy boundaries, encourage offline connections, and guide young users toward safer, more balanced habits.

  • Conclusion

  • What to Expect: In this final section, we’ll wrap up the workshop with a quick recap of the key takeaways. From there, you’ll complete the last Knowledge Check. Thank you for your participation, check out the other workshops!
